A Briggs Cunningham Corvette car that raced at Le Mans is up for auction.
The Chevrolet Corvette that Briggs Cunningham raced in the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans is up for sale.
Auction house RM Sotheby's has confirmed that the number one Corvette that Cunningham and William Kimberly raced, thought to be lost forever, will be offered in a May 22 sale in Amelia Island, Florida. It will be offered without reserve and will likely sell for over $1 million.
The car, with chassis no. 00867S103535, crashed on lap 32 of the Le Mans race and never finished the race. The Cunningham-operated team entered three Corvettes, with the No. 3 car, driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman, winning its class.
While the whereabouts of cars 2 and 3 have always been known, car No. 3 has yet to be found; car No. 3 was always known, but car No. 1 was missing for decades until it was found in a warehouse in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2012. As is often the case with such finds, there was some controversy over who was the actual owner, but that seems to have been resolved.
