Hyundai Teases Large Electric Crossover Scheduled for 2024 Launch

Hyundai has released another more revealing look at the large electric crossover likely to be called the Ioniq 7, which is confirmed for launch in early 2024.

In a video released this week highlighting Hyundai's plans to become a fully electrified brand by 2040, three vehicles are briefly introduced (starting at 22 seconds), one of which is the Ioniq 5, a small electric crossover for 2022.

Next to the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai's Prophecy concept from 2020, an electric sedan called the Ioniq 6 in 2022. And next to it is a large crossover that is expected to feature a coupe-like profile but support three rows of seats. What we are seeing is a concept version of the crossover and may not be the final production model.

Hyundai offered the first look at the crossover in 2020 when it unveiled its new Ioniq sub-brand of electric vehicles. At the time, Hyundai said the crossover would debut with the Ioniq 5 and use a version of Hyundai Motor Group's E-GMP modular EV platform, which is also shared with the related Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. This platform will also underpin the Ioniq 6.

The platform will allow for a 0-60 mph time of less than 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 161 mph, and a range of close to 300 miles. Impressively, it also has an 800-volt electrical system, which allows for charging at high kilowatt ratings. Another feature is bi-directional charging, which allows the E-GMP vehicle to power equipment and homes and charge other EVs.

Expect to see both the Ioniq 6 and the crossover introduced in the US. In May, Hyundai announced plans to invest $7.4 billion in its U.S. operations by 2025, most of which will be spent on expanding EV production.
