Porsche 928 "Risky Business" sold at auction for about $2 million.

A 1979 Porsche 928 used in the filming of "Risky Business" sold at Barrett-Jackson's first auction in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.

After intense bidding, the car sold for $1.98 million, making it the most expensive car at the auction.

A search of the classifieds shows many 928s for sale starting at around $20,000. Given the car's history, it would not be surprising if they sold for more. After all, it is not just a Porsche 928, it is a Porsche 928.

If you are of the generation that saw the movie in the early 1980s, there is a good chance that you saw this movie in theaters (and, no doubt, on VHS or DVD). The plot and story may have been replaced beyond memory, but there is a good chance that you remember three things.

First, that it was the rise of a young actor named Tom Cruise; second, that Rebecca de Mornay was the hottest woman on the planet at the time the movie was shot; and third, that the Porsche 928 was seriously fast by early 1980s standards. And third, the Porsche 928 was seriously fast by early 1980s standards. Without a doubt, the film boosted 928 sales more than any automotive review ever written.

Three roadworthy 928s were used in the filming of Risky Business, one of which was thrown into Lake Michigan. This one, VIN 9289201213 and actually shipped from the factory painted green, is the only known and documented survivor of "Risky Business" and was used for the majority of the wide shot driving scenes, including the famous chase scene. It is also signed by some of the cast members, including Joe Pantoliano (Guido), Bronson Pinchot (Barry), and Curtis Armstrong (Miles).

The film was sold after filming and rediscovered by Louis Johnsen in the mid-2000s. He detailed his search for the car in a documentary called "The Quest for the RB928 (Risky Business 928)." According to the sales listing, film producer John Avnet said it was this car that Cruise learned to stick drive. The car is equipped with a five-speed manual that sends drive power from a front-mounted 4.5-liter V-8 engine to the rear wheels. With a maximum output of 219 hp, the car accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 143 mph.

Cruz became a Porsche fan after the filming. One of his early Porsches was a 1986 911 Carrera Targa, which sold for $86,000 in August.

Other highlights of Barrett-Jackson's Houston sale included a 2019 Ford GT that sold for about $1.2 million, a 1966 Ford that Stirling Moss raced in vintage events in the 1990s and upgraded to competition specs Shelby GT350. It sold for $495,000.
