2024 BMW 5 Series spy shots and video: the popular sedan will be slimmer in the next version

A prototype of BMW's next-generation 5 Series has been spotted once again.

The new mid-size sedan is still in the early stages of development, but many details have already been confirmed.

The proportions are reminiscent of the beloved E39 generation, and the headlights appear to be slimmer than the current generation. The headlights also taper back along the fenders, indicating that they are much larger than in recent generations.

When it comes to what's under the hood, BMW wants to offer customers their preferred powertrain, at least until they eventually switch to a full electric lineup. As a result, the powertrains will include mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric options. Yes, there will be an electric 5 Series car that will likely be named the i5. In fact, a prototype has already been spotted.

This flexibility will be made possible by the latest version of BMW Group's CLAR modular platform, which will accommodate hybrid and battery-electric options as well as conventional powertrains. There are reports that future M5s will also offer a choice of plug-in hybrid or battery-electric power, marking the first time that a super sedan will offer multiple powertrain options.

Expect the new 5 Series to debut in 2023 as a 2024 model; the M5 variant should arrive about six months to a year later. But before that, BMW fans can look forward to the new generation X1 and 7 Series, as well as the new performance crossover as a BMW M exclusive.
