2024 Audi A4 Avant Spy Shots and Video: The Evolution of the A4

Prototypes of the redesigned Audi A4 have been spotted again.

The prototype is in the A4 Avant wagon body style, but a sedan tester should appear soon. Audi does not offer the A4 Avant in the U.S., but we still get a wagon body in the guise of the A4 Allroad soft-roader.

The current A4 and B9 were introduced for the 2017 model year, with a mid-cycle update for 2020. The redesigned A4 and B10 should appear in the 2024 model year and will likely debut in early 2023.

The prototype is lightly camouflaged only at the front. The design is similar to the latest A3, but we can see that a few more curves will be introduced. Moving to the rear, the roofline is more curved than the current A4 Avant, indicating an overall sportier appearance. Temporary lights are mounted on the rear of the tester, so we will have to wait for a more advanced prototype to see the taillight design.

Inside, we will see a clean dashboard with a single panel for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. It should also offer an advanced heads-up display with augmented reality elements (e.g., navigation symbols).

Audi has confirmed that it will introduce only electric vehicles starting in 2026, meaning that this will be the last A4 generation with an internal combustion engine. The platform should be an updated version of the Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform used in the current A4, meaning a longitudinal engine and standard front-wheel drive.

All powertrains are expected to be electrified, with mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology. It is unclear if diesel engines will be offered, but they may be offered in markets where diesel fuel is popular.

A redesigned electric version of the A4 based on VW Group's PPE modular EV platform is also expected to be available, but it may receive a unique styling treatment to differentiate it from the regular A4. the PPE platform was introduced this year on the Audi Q6 debuting with the E-Tron, which will eventually spawn multiple EVs across the VW Group's brand portfolio.

Interestingly, the redesigned A4 will reportedly be topped by two electrified RS variants (one battery-electric, the other a plug-in hybrid) developed by Audi Sport. Stay tuned.
