Ford Mustang Convertible 2024 spy shots: new convertible spotted

Prototypes of the redesigned Ford Mustang have recently begun to be released, and our latest spy shots indicate that this is most likely a convertible body-style tester for the seventh-generation "Stang."

Compared to previous prototypes, the new tester is much more heavily camouflaged, especially around its roof section. The roof profile is also different, much closer to that of the current Mustang convertible.

Don't expect Ford to give the Mustang Convertible's roof a facelift. There will be a retractable soft top hidden under the camouflage.

The redesigned Mustang, codenamed S650 (the current Mustang is the S550), was originally expected to arrive this year as a 2023 model. It is now believed to be introduced in 2023 as a 2024 model.

As was rumored at one point, it will likely ride on an updated version of the current car's bespoke D2C platform, as opposed to the modular platform CD6 version that debuted on the latest Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. To back this up, the proportions of the prototype and the current car are similar. Of course, there will be styling differences. The headlights are expected to be slimmer, while the rest of the car will have a sleeker, more modern overall design.

The current 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 and 5.0-liter V-8 powertrain options will likely be retained, albeit with improved performance. The long-awaited hybrid option, originally promised for introduction around 2020, is also expected to be introduced in the redesigned Mustang. This hybrid will likely combine a 5.0-liter V-8 with one or more electric motors.

It is also rumored to be an all-wheel drive system, with an electric motor on each axle. It is also expected to have sufficient battery capacity for a small electric range. Hopefully weight will not be an issue, as the current Mustang GT with a manual transmission already weighs in at 3,743 pounds.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
