The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS is introduced.

The SS performance variant will be added to the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer electric crossover SUV, which will be available in 2023.

Chevrolet released teaser images and a short video on Wednesday confirming the electric Blazer SS. The automaker said a full reveal will come later this year, ahead of a spring 2023 launch. Chevrolet spokeswoman Kelly Van Meer told the Motor Authority that the electric Blazer SS will be a 2024 model.

Plans for an electric Blazer were confirmed in January during General Motors CEO Mary Barra's Consumer Electronics Show keynote address, where GM also announced the Chevrolet Equinox EV. The crossover SUV is just two of 20 electric models GM has announced will be available in North America by 2023.

GM showed some renderings of the Equinox EV at CES, but has yet to show a finished image of the Blazer EV. The Blazer will likely use the same Ultium battery system as the Equinox EV and other upcoming GM EVs, including the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup truck, also shown at CES.

The SS badge, which stands for "Super Sport," adorned some of Chevrolet's most iconic muscle cars in the 1960s. Since then, it has been reused several times, including during the early 2000s revival that spawned a whole lineup of SS models (Malibu Maxx SS, anyone?), but has largely been shelved to date, except for its use on the current Camaro SS.

This is the first time the Blazer has worn the SS badge, but the Blazer EV is not the first SS-badged SUV. Chevrolet introduced the Trailblazer SS for the 2006 model year. Not to be confused with the current subcompact Trailblazer, this mid-size SUV was powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 engine producing approximately 390 horsepower.

Power and range statistics for the electric Blazer SS will have to wait until next spring, but given the power potential of the electric powertrain, the Blazer SS may live up to its name.
