Spy shots and video of 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class: the popular crossover will get an update

Mercedes-Benz's next-generation GLC-Class has been spotted once again.

The current GLC-Class was introduced in 2016 and received a mid-cycle update in 2020. In Mercedes tradition, a redesigned model should appear in 2022 as the 2023 model.

The GLC-class appears to be growing slightly for the next generation, giving the recently launched GLB-class a little more room while adding interior space. Nevertheless, the new GLC-class remains in the small crossover segment and is destined to battle it out with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60, and the new Genesis GV70.

The proportions have also changed slightly. The hood appears to have been extended and the roofline lowered. The rear haunches also appear to be more pronounced. The result should be a sleeker, sportier appearance than the current model.

Under the skin will be a platform shared with the C-Class, which will be redesigned in 2022. In other words, it will be an updated version of Mercedes' MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform that underpins the current GLC-class.

The updated platform will result in significant weight savings, primarily through increased use of aluminum over steel. This was made possible by advanced joining techniques, including welding of aluminum and steel. All-wheel steering is also employed, which contributes to improved maneuverability in tight parking spaces.

As for the powertrain, the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 will likely remain the base option. On top of that, the same 2.0-liter engine will likely be combined with some form of hybrid. Most, if not all, GLC-class variants will employ some form of electrification.

Engineers are also likely developing a new GLC-class coupe. It should appear about six months to a year after the regular GLC-class.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
