Nismo has unveiled the Nissan Z race car for the Fuji 24-hour race.

The 2023 Nissan Z will compete in the Super Taikyu Series 24-hour race at Fuji Speedway on June 4.

Nissan's Nismo Performance Division announced in a press release on Thursday that two cars will compete in the ST-Q class, one by Nismo's factory team and the other by privateer team Max Racing. Three drivers will be assigned to each car.

Nissan previously debuted the Z racing car in the GT500 class, the pinnacle of the Japanese Super GT series. This version appears to be closer to the stock version. Although Nismo has not released technical specifications, the ST-Q Z lacks the wide body and huge rear wing of the GT500. However, a smaller rear wing, roll cage, cooling cutouts added to the hood, and huge brakes behind what appear to be lightweight wheels have been confirmed.

The GT500 Z is powered by a regulation 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo that produces 650 hp, while the ST-Q Z may have something closer to the road car's 3.0-liter V-6 twin turbo that produces 400 hp in stock form.

This could be a one-off effort, as the ST-Q class is for "development vehicles" that do not fall under the other Super Taikyu series classes. The series is open to manufacturer experimentation, and Toyota has been allowed to race a Corolla Sport hatchback with a prototype hydrogen-burning engine in 2021. Nismo said it will gather data from the Fuji race and explore the possibility of Z racing in other categories.

Given the Z's rich racing history in the U.S., where it has produced the likes of Paul Newman, it would not be surprising if Nissan expanded its new car racing program beyond Japan. For now, the road-going Z is expected to hit U.S. dealerships this summer as a 2023 model.
