2023 Dodge Hornet spy shots Alfa Romeo Tonale lookalike spotted.

Sterantis confirmed last summer that the Dodge brand plans to launch a plug-in hybrid in 2022, and now the first spy shots of a prototype have been released.

The vehicle, a compact crossover called the Dodge Hornet, is expected to debut later this summer.

The prototype confirms rumors that the Hornet is actually a twin to the recently unveiled 2023 Tonale compact crossover from Alfa Romeo under the same Sterantis brand. Differences appear to be limited to headlight internals, grille and front mask treatments, and wheel patterns. Different elements are also likely to be seen in the cabin of each car.

The platform is the same setup that underpins the Jeep Renegade and Compass. The powertrain on the Hornet has not been revealed, but the plug-in hybrid powertrain on the Tonale will consist of a 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 that drives the front wheels and an electric motor that drives the rear wheels, with the two power sources combined producing 272 hp The tonneau is known to have a power output of 256 hp. A 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that produces 256 hp has also been announced for the Tonale. It is possible that both powertrains will be available in the Dodge.

Interestingly, Dodge previously used the Hornet name for its 2006 hot hatch concept. The name originated with Hudson in the 1950s and was transferred to American Motors Corporation, formed by the merger of Hudson and Nash-Kelvinator in 1954; AMC was eventually acquired by Chrysler in 1987.

Dodge in 2022 will also unveil an electric muscle car concept slated for 2024. This electric muscle car will be based on one of four battery-electric platforms that Sterantis will use for future models across its 14 brands. Stay tuned.
