Rolls-Royce showcases the second of three coaster tails.
Rolls-Royce unveiled two of its three Boat Tail convertibles on Friday as part of the British ultra-luxury automaker's return to coachbuilding.
The Boat Tail is a product of Rolls-Royce's Coachbuild division, which was opened to the public to demonstrate the division's capabilities. The three cars were built for another client who approached Rolls after seeing the one-off Swept Tail presented in 2017.
In keeping with the tradition of formal coachbuilding, the bodywork of the Boat Tail is handcrafted from sheets of aluminum. According to Rolls, the design was inspired by racing yachts of the early 20th century. Although the automaker has not revealed technical details, it appears that the Boat Tail will be based on Rolls' previous-generation platform and not the aluminum space frame used by the current Phantom, Ghost, and Cullinan.
The customer who commissioned the second boattail was a family man in the pearl industry and gave the designer four pearls to use as inspiration for the exterior color, Rolls said. The automaker describes the color as "a sparkling blend of oyster and soft rose, with large white and bronze mica flakes adding a distinctive pearlescent luster."
This custom color is contrasted by a cognac-colored hood with bronze and gold aluminum flakes and a clear coat of crystal and ice matte. The traditional pantheon grille and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament are finished in rose gold.
Like the first Boat Tail, unveiled in 2021, this car has a nautical wood finish on the rear deck. In this case, the customer chose royal walnut with rose gold pinstripes. Two sections of the deck open to reveal what Rolls calls a "hosting suite." This is essentially a trunk that holds a refrigerator, champagne flutes, and other items for roadside picnics.
Royal walnut veneer was also used for the interior, with cognac and oyster-colored leather and rose gold and mother-of-pearl accents. A mother-of-pearl timepiece from the client's collection was mounted on the dashboard.
The second generation Rolls-Royce Boat Tail will be officially unveiled at the 2022 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, scheduled for May 21. Since it is roughly a year after the first Boat Tail was unveiled, we will probably see the third and final example of this land yacht in a year's time.
The gentleman will not ask the price of the boat-tail, nor has Rolls-Royce said. But it is estimated that the first of the three boats cost $14.5 million. Apparently the pearl industry is quite lucrative.
