Polestar 3, will debut in October.
Polestar revealed Thursday in a press release on its first-quarter 2022 sales figures that the Polestar 3 electric SUV will debut in October.
The Paulstar 3, which was teased for December 2021, will likely go on sale in the U.S. as a 2023 model. It will be produced at the Charleston, South Carolina plant of Paulstar's parent company, Volvo, and at Paulstar's existing Chinese plant.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath has said that the brand's first SUV will be similar in size to the successor to the Volvo XC90 and will be available in an all-electric variant alongside a hybrid powertrain option. Both will use Volvo's new SPA2 platform, and the XC90's successor will also be built in South Carolina.
The Polestar 3 will be differentiated from its Volvo siblings by a greater emphasis on performance; in an interview with Motor Authority in 2021, Polestar Americas boss Gregor Hembrow said the target for the Polestar is Porsche said.
Paulstar 3 is expected to target the Porsche Cayenne, followed by Paulstar 4 and Paulstar 5, which will target the Macan and the Taikan, respectively. The name Polestar comes from an independent racing team and tuning company that was later acquired by Volvo.
This strategy would effectively make the Polestar 3 the brand's new flagship, temporarily creating a significant gap between it and the current Polestar 2 until other models are introduced. The Paulstar 4 is expected to be a low-end small SUV, while the Paulstar 5 is expected to be a sedan using the same SPA2 platform as the 3 and its Volvo XC90 successor, with styling inspired by the 2020 Paulstar Precept Concept. The 4 is expected to arrive in 2023 and the 5 in 2024.
