Prodrive P25 transforms into a modern Subaru Impreza 22B STI
Twenty-five years have passed since Subaru introduced the first Impreza WRC rally car in the World Rally Championship with the help of Prodrive.
Prodrive, a motorsports and engineering company, is celebrating the Subaru World Rally Team's hat-trick of World Rally Championship victories between 1995 and 1997 with the iconic Impreza 22B STI, which Subaru launched in 1998. The team plans to build a modernized version of the car.
The Prodrive car will be called the P25 and only 25 will be built, with the first model to be unveiled at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, June 23-26. Prodrive is currently accepting expressions of interest. Deliveries to customers will begin later this year.
The P25 is based on a coupe version of the 1990s GC8 generation Impreza and will closely match the 22B design. The modern car will be designed by Peter Stevens, who was responsible for the styling of the original Impreza WRC. Teaser sketches suggest larger wheels than the 22B and side mirrors styled like those used on rally cars.
According to Prodrive, performance will also be a big step up from the 22B; the P25 will be more powerful, lighter, and handle better. Performance features slated for the car include a state-of-the-art 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-4 with over 400 hp, a six-speed sequential transmission, and carbon fiber body parts. 22B has a 2.2-liter turbocharged flat-4 and five-speed manual. Officially listed at 276 hp, the actual output was closer to 300 hp.
"The original 22B Impreza is the most iconic and highly sought after of the Subarus," Prodrive Chairman David Richards said in a statement. 'We wanted to elevate everything that makes this car so special by bringing the latest technology and a modern interpretation to a car that has etched its name in motorsport history.'
