Ford is recalling about 3 million vehicles due to rollover hazards.

Ford is recalling more than 2.9 million vehicles over concerns that transmission parts could deteriorate and cause vehicles to roll over after shifting into park.

First spotted by Reuters, the recall affects several Ford models across a wide range of model years. The list includes models from the 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge.

According to a Ford recall report filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the bushings that attach the shifter cable to the transmission may deteriorate or come off in the affected vehicles. Ford states that the root cause of this defect is unknown.

If the bushing is damaged or dislodged, the transmission may not shift into the intended gear. This includes not fully entering park when the driver selects park, which could cause the vehicle to roll over if the parking brake is not used.

Ford reported 1,630 warranty claims related to this issue, in addition to 233 complaints filed with NHTSA. The company stated that it is aware of four injury claims and at least six property damage claims related to the issue.

To remedy the problem, Ford dealers will replace the underhood shift bushings at no charge and add protective caps to the shift cable bushings. Notices will be mailed to owners beginning June 27. Owners may also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 22S43.

According to Reuters, this is Ford's fifth recall for this issue since 2018, having previously recalled 1.4 million vehicles worldwide for shifter cable problems. According to Reuters, Ford also announced a recall in April for a similar issue and has been in discussions with the NHTSA since then to monitor vehicles not subject to recall, including those subject to this recall.

The recall follows Ford's announcement earlier this week of a Bronco and Mustang Mach recall of 53,103 Bronco four-door models to address a potentially defective rear door child safety lock. The Mach-E recall affects 48,924 vehicles and addresses concerns about overheating. Ford also issued a cease-and-desist order for the Mach-E.
