EV startup Draco returns with the 2000-horsepower Dragon SUV

There is an electric car startup in Silicon Valley named Drako that announced an electric super sedan, the GTE, with 1,200 horsepower and starting at $1.25 million in 2019.

At the time, its performance was still somewhat revolutionary for a production EV, but since then, both Tesla and Lucid have launched electric sedans with over 1,000 horsepower, but at a fraction of Drako's price. In the case of Tesla's Model S Plaid, it costs less than $140,000.

The GTE was supposed to be released in 2021, but that never happened, and now Drako is focusing on a new model, this time an SUV. It is called the Dragon, and Draco boasts a peak output of 2,000 hp. With this much power, Drako claims that the Dragon can go from a standstill to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and a quarter mile in 9.0 seconds flat, with a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

The Dragon's powertrain is a quad-motor system with each motor operating independently for precise torque vectoring. The system is controlled by Drako's proprietary DriveOS software. Dragon will also be equipped with a three-way adjustable suspension that will allow it to handle both flat roads and rough off-road trails, according to Drako. Battery details were not mentioned, but Drako's GTE will be powered by a 90-kilowatt-hour unit with an announced range of about 200 miles.

While Drako's GTE used the more rugged Fisker Karma and current Karma GS-6 bodies, the Dragon features a custom-built body by GranStudio. This Italian design house and coachbuilder will also be responsible for Dragon's production.

The Dragon's design features supercar-like elements such as flying buttresses and gull wing doors. The structure is mostly made of carbon fiber, and the car's interior is said to have space for five people and all their luggage.

Not wanting to be priced out of the market, Draco said the Dragon will be competitively priced against competing high-performance SUVs such as the Aston Martin DBX, Lamborghini Urus, and the recently unveiled Lotus Elettre. In other words, a price range of around $200,000 is expected.

Drako has not revealed how many cars will be built, but we imagine it will be more than the 25 GTEs the company previously planned; Drako will begin taking reservations for the Dragon soon and plans to reveal the vehicle later this year.
