Toyota GR GT3 surface patent drawings.

Toyota unveiled its GR GT3 race car concept at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon in January.

And now patent drawings have been released that may reveal a production version of this racing car.

The patent drawings, registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on May 27, show a design very similar to the concept, albeit with subtle differences. These can be seen on the rear, including a less extreme rear diffuser and the lack of a rear wing with swan-neck struts.

Toyota already offers a Supra GT4 customer race car, and there is a Supra-based race car designed for the Japanese SUPER GT touring car series. So why not use an existing sports car? Toyota stated at the time of the GR GT3's unveiling that the new design would allow the company to more effectively test technologies that are not yet available in production or racing cars.

We would not be surprised if the GR GT3 is used to develop parts for a planned electric supercar from Lexus. The electric supercar concept was unveiled last December, and its proportions are very similar to those seen in the GR GT3.

We should remind you that these drawings do not indicate that the GR GT3 is any closer to production than the concept was when it was first unveiled, as automakers often file patents simply to protect their designs.
