Spy shots of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class: small update of the large SUV

Mercedes-Benz is working on a mid-cycle update to the GLS-Class and a prototype has been spotted.

Prototypes of an updated version of the Maybach GLS-Class are also out and engineers are supposedly testing a prototype of an updated version of the AMG GLS 63.

The current generation GLS-Class was introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model, with the Maybach version coming a year later. In Mercedes tradition, this mid-cycle update should be introduced for the 2024 model year, meaning a debut is likely sometime next year.

The prototype will have only light camouflage and minor cosmetic tweaks. We can expect a new front mask and new internals for the lights on both ends. The grille is also likely to be changed.

The interior of the GLS-Class will also receive some tweaks in this update. According to sources, elements of the S-Class, such as the steering wheel design, will be incorporated into the GLS-Class. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment system graphics should also be updated.

Powertrain plans are not clear, but a plug-in hybrid option is a possibility; the GLS-Class currently offers inline 6-cylinder and V8 turbocharged engines in mild hybrid versions.

The most powerful is AMG's GLS 63, which features a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 in a mild hybrid configuration. Maximum output is 603 hp and maximum torque is 627 lb-ft.

Mercedes plans to focus on its top-of-the-line models, including the GLS-Class, for the next few years. Buyers can expect more personalization options and possibly limited edition models.
