Steeda SSV Program converts Ford Mustangs and Explorers for police use.

Ford tuner Steeda not only makes fast cars for the public, but also for the cops who track them down. Its Special Service Vehicle (SSV) program equips Ford Mustangs and Ford Explorers for police duty.

The latest in a long line of Mustang police cars, the Steeda SSV Mustang is based on the Mustang GT, with a stock 5.0-liter V-8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission Steeda has its own software tuning, cold air intake, and cat-back exhaust, but it is not clear to what extent these additions improve upon the stock 450 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.

Steeda also has adjustable front and rear sway bars and staggered-width (10-inch front, 11-inch rear) 20-inch wheels with Nitto Invo tires. It is also equipped with police graphics and lights.

Steeda also offers performance upgrades for stock Explorer Police cars (formally Police Interceptor Utility) with 3.3-liter V-6, 3.0-liter V-6 twin turbo, or hybrid powertrains . All versions feature low-down springs, an adjustable rear sway bar, and a rear strut tower brace. The twin-turbo V-6 models will also receive software tuning, but again, Steeda did not specify specific power figures.

Although the company is currently expanding its offerings, Steeda is not new to the police car business. Over the past 30 years, the company has built cars for police departments in Georgia and Florida, a spokesperson told the Motor Authority.

The Explorer has effectively taken over Ford's default police cars from the Crown Victoria and Taurus, so there should be a healthy supply of vehicles for Steeda to tune up. Ford also provides the F-150 police car and also builds the Mustang Mach-E police car for New York City. Will Steeda tackle these tunings next?
