2024 Volkswagen Taos spy shots: minor updates planned

Volkswagen just introduced the Taos in the U.S. a year ago, but the subcompact crossover has been on sale in China since 2018 and is known as the Tharu.

An updated Tharu prototype was just spotted, pointing to adjustments that will likely be seen on the Taos in the US. Updated versions of both crossovers should appear next year, meaning a 2024 model year in the US.

Judging from the prototypes, it will feature redesigned lights on both ends, a new fascia design, and a new grille. It is also possible that the interior will be tweaked, including an updated infotainment system.

As of now, the Taos powertrain department is not expected to change. The crossover will be offered exclusively with a 1.5-liter turbo four that delivers 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive models will be mated to an eight-speed automatic, while all-wheel-drive models will be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. In China, a more diverse powertrain portfolio is offered in the Tal, consisting of 1.2-liter, 1.4-liter, and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines.

Production of the Taos for the U.S. market takes place at VW's plant in Pueblo, Mexico. The car sold a respectable 31,682 units in the U.S. last year and is expected to do even better in 2022, its first full year on the market.
