2024 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Spy Video: Hybrid Powertrain Testing

Porsche's latest 911 Carrera GTS has just been introduced as a 2022 model, but an updated version is already being tested.

The update is likely to be mild and will likely coincide with plans to update the full range of 992s, known internally as the 992.2 generation. Prototypes of the updated 911 Carrera, 911 GT3, and 911 Turbo models have already been spotted, with some Carrera and Turbo prototypes testing the new hybrid powertrains.

Judging by the yellow warning sticker on this latest prototype, the hybrid powertrain may also be slated for the updated GTS. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume admitted in March that the 911 is getting closer to going electric. He said the hybrid setup will be along the lines of the former 919 Hybrid LMP1 racing car, not a plug-in hybrid like the hypercar 918 Spyder. In other words, there is no plug, and the electric motor-generator is used purely to support the internal combustion engine and to recover energy during braking.

The current GTS powertrain consists of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six rated at 473 hp and 420 lb-ft, mated to a 7-speed manual or 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Beyond the powertrain updates, tweaks to other parts of the car will be mild. The prototype reveals a new front mask design, perhaps sporting larger intakes with active vertical flaps.

The prototype may look like an earlier tester of an updated version of the regular Carrera, but the center-lock wheels indicate it is a GTS version.

The interior cannot be confirmed, but we expect an improved dashboard with a fully digital instrument cluster similar to that found on the Taycan.

We expect the updated 911 series, including the GTS model, to begin arriving next year as 2024 models. Stay tuned.
