Opel Unveils First Electric Performance Model, Astra GSe

Opel on Wednesday unveiled the Astra GSe, the first in a new series of electrified performance cars. [This is a designation taken from the GSE badge that was worn on performance-oriented versions of Opel's Commodore and Monza in the 1970s and 1980s. At the time, the "E" meant "einspritzung," the German word for "injection," but today it means "electrified performance.

The Astra GSe is a plug-in hybrid, with a powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbo four and electric motor combo that produces 221 hp peak power and 265 lb-ft of torque; a 12.4 kwh battery allows for a modest electric range, and a 12.4 kwh battery is also available.

The same powertrain is available in the regular Astra, but the GSe is paired with a sport-tuned chassis. Major changes to the chassis include new springs, Koni adjustable dampers, a 10 mm lower ride height, 18" light alloys, recalibrated steering and an electronic stability control system.

The GSe treatment also adds several visual models. In addition to new wheels, the Astra GSe has a new front end. The interior features Alcantara sport seats in the front.

The Astra GSe can be ordered as both a regular hatch and a sports tourer wagon.

Sales in markets where Opel operates will begin later this year.

"The new Astra GSe and the new Astra Sports Tourer GSe are the ideal vehicles to launch a dynamic new sub-brand that is fully in line with our strategy to become an all-electric car brand by 2028," Opel CEO Florian Hüttl said in a statement.
