2023 Mercedes-Benz unveils EQE SUV with 677 hp maximum output

Following the just-launched fully electric 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Mercedes has revealed a smaller, more dynamic alternative, the 2023 EQE SUV.

The EQE SUV will go on sale in 2023 as a 2023 model; the AMG-enhanced EQE SUV was revealed alongside the regular model on Sunday and has been confirmed as a 2024 model, though it has not been announced whether it will be available next year.

The EQE SUV will be available in the U.S. in 350+, 350 4Matic, and 500 4Matic grades, and eventually an AMG grade.

Pricing will be announced closer to market launch next year.

While the EQS SUV targets the full-size segment and appeals to large families thanks to its third-row seats, the EQE SUV is aimed at more mainstream buyers with its mid-size stature and two-row seats. At 191.6 inches in length, the EQE SUV is 7.0 inches shorter than the Tesla Model X, but its 119.3-inch wheelbase is nearly 3.0 inches longer than the Tesla, giving it a roomy interior. Rear legroom is spacious at 40.5 inches.

As the name suggests, the EQE SUV is a high-riding counterpart to the EQE sedan, also coming in 2023. Both use Mercedes' EVA modular platform, which is also used in the EQS hatch and EQS SUV; in the EQE SUV, this platform supports a 90.6 kwh battery that can be charged to 10-80% capacity in about 32 minutes using a DC fast charger. Mercedes has not provided a range estimate.

The 350+ grade will have a single motor in the rear that produces 288 hp peak output; the 350 4matic will have a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with the same 288 hp maximum output as the 350+, but with more torque. The 500 4matic also equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and has a maximum output of 536 hp.

Buyers seeking ultimate performance will want to wait for the AMG EQE SUV. Maximum output from the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain is 617 hp, and 677 hp when equipped with the available Dynamic Plus package. When equipped with this package, the AMG EQE SUV will go from a standstill to 60 mph in an estimated 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 137 mph standard and 149 mph with the Dynamic Plus package.

As for handling, the EQE SUV comes standard with air suspension. Adaptive dampers and all-wheel steering are also available, making it well worth it for buyers who enjoy the occasional spirited drive. the AMG EQE SUV comes standard with AMG's own tuning of the air suspension and active roll stabilization. AMG also boasts a strong braking package consisting of six-piston calipers with 16.3-inch rotors up front and single-piston calipers with 14.9-inch rotors in the rear. Even larger carbon ceramic rotors are available for those who need them.

The exterior of the EQE SUV follows the familiar aerodynamically honed styling that Mercedes has introduced to its EQ series of EVs. The exterior is somewhat innocuous, but for some buyers that may be an advantage. Buyers looking for a vehicle that stands out in this segment will want to consider the BMW iX or the Cadillac Ryliq.

The design of the AMG EQE SUV looks almost identical to the regular version, except for the vertical stripes on the pseudo-grille and the larger wheels (standard 19-inch wheels on the regular model, 21-inch wheels on the AMG) and brakes. One design detail new to Mercedes is the AMG badge on the hood in place of the traditional Mercedes star. However, the star remains on the grille and tailgate.

The interior of the EQE SUV matches the EQE sedan and is very similar to the interiors of the EQS and EQS SUV. Up front, a full Mercedes digital dash, known as the HyperScreen, is available. Here, a series of digital screens are housed under a single glass cover. The standard setup is a more conventional design with a 12.3-inch digital meter cluster and a separate 12.8-inch screen for infotainment. Both feature Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system for infotainment.

The AMG adds bolstered seats that better envelop the body during high-speed cornering. The AMG logo is also featured throughout the cabin, along with contrast stitching, a sport steering wheel, and illuminated door sill plates with "AMG" lettering. The cabin also echoes with AMG's distinctive sound, which varies in intensity depending on the selected drive mode.

Production of the EQE SUV will take place at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the EQS SUV is produced.
