Ascendiq" name to be trademarked for possible use on Cadillac's electric vehicles

A new trademark application suggests another possible name for a future Cadillac electric vehicle.

General Motors recently filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the name "Ascendiq." This name conforms to Cadillac's current EV naming style, which uses names ending in "-iq."

Cadillac aims to sell only EVs by the end of the decade and expects to launch only EVs in the future. This rollout has already begun with the 2023 Cadillac Relic crossover and will continue with the Celestiq flagship sedan, planned for 2024 and possibly the 2025 model year.

Besides these two models, Cadillac is expected to introduce an electric compact crossover for the 2024 model year, followed by a midsize crossover with third-row seating, and an electric version of the Escalade.

Cadillac has three upcoming EVs with undetermined names, but with the filing of the Ascendiq, at least six trademarks may be used: in 2020, the Cadillac Optiq and Cadillac Symboliq trademarks will be filed, in 2021 Vistiq and Lumistiq will follow. Cadillac also filed a trademark application at this time for the name Escalade IQL, which suggests a nomenclature for the Escalade EV.

Not all Cadillac dealers are on board with the electrification of the brand. Cadillac announced last year that about one-third of its dealers have decided not to sell EVs and have taken buyouts; GM has also offered buyouts to Buick dealers, but has indicated that it will not offer them to Chevrolet dealers and has remained silent on plans for GMC dealers.
