A hybrid version of the C8 Chevrolet Corvette has been rumored for years, and was finally confirmed in April along with plans for an electric Corvette.

While a fully electric "Vette" is probably still a few years away, the hybrid will appear in summer 2023 under the name Corvette E-Ray. Based on this timing, it will appear as a 2024 model.

In the latest spy shots, the prototype lacks any camouflage at all. Not surprisingly, a photo of this car was recently posted on Chevrolet's website, but has since been removed.

The car features the same wide-body design as the Corvette Z06, which will be introduced in 2023, but while the Z06 has black accents on its aero parts, the E-Ray uses body color for these parts.

Earlier spy shots show prototypes of the Corvette with coupe and convertible body styles and left- and right-hand drive layouts. Chevrolet engineers also used the Corvette Stingray and Acura NSX as benchmarks.

The E-Ray is expected to have one or two electric motors on the front axle and the Stingray's 6.2-liter V-8 engine on the rear axle. Early teaser footage showed the prototype being tested on snow, with the front wheels spinning under their own power, suggesting all-wheel drive. An electric motor that can be integrated with the Corvette's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and drive the rear wheels is also a possibility, judging from a recent patent.

Peak output is expected to be 600-650 hp, with a more powerful hybrid configuration expected during the C8 Corvette's product cycle, rumored to be a range-topping variant called the Zora.

Yes, more electrification is coming to the Corvette lineup, including, as mentioned, full electrification. Electric Corvettes will likely feature General Motors' Ultium electric powertrain and battery toolset, with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV making up to 1,000 horsepower GM stated last year that it aims to have all light vehicles powered by electricity by 2035. Given that GM stated last year that it aims to have all light cars powered by electricity by 2035, the news of an electric Corvette should not come as much of a surprise. What might surprise some is that the electric Corvette lineup may eventually be expanded with additional body styles, such as SUVs. However, nothing has yet been confirmed on that front.
