Dodge Challenger to surpass Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in 2022.

The Dodge Challenger continued to win Detroit's pony car wars in 2022, outselling the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro for the second year in a row, not bad for a basic design dating back to the 2008 model year.

According to U.S. sales figures, Dodge will sell 55,060 Challengers in 2022, up about 1% from the previous year.

Mustang sales continued to decline. Ford sold 47,566 total units in 2022, down 9.2% from the previous year and down 14.2% from 2020 The 2022 figure was the lowest annual sales volume in Mustang history.

The Mustang has traditionally been the fastest horse in the sales race and still leads even counting the electric crossover Mustang Mach-E sales. Mach-E sales increased 45.4% in 2022, with Ford selling 39,458 crossovers. Traditional Mustang sales could pick up once the redesigned model arrives at dealerships in 2024.

At 24,652 units in 2022, Chevrolet's Camaro temporarily halted the downward slide it has been on for the past few years; it was up 12.6% over 2021 and grew despite the absence of a major Camaro update. Chevrolet's indifference has contributed to rumors that the Camaro will be gone after 2024, and the nameplate could be recycled for an electric performance sedan.

As for the Challenger, 2023 will be the last year of the coupe's current model year. Dodge is rolling out a series of "last call" special editions of the Challenger and its sibling, the Charger sedan, with the seventh and final last call model set to debut in Las Vegas on March 20. The electric muscle car, inspired by the Charger SRT Daytona Concept, will replace both the Challenger and Charger when it goes on sale in 2024.
