2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Spy Shot

A prototype of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class was spotted testing again, this time in sedan guise.

The current E-Class was introduced for the 2017 model year and received a mid-cycle update for 2021. In Mercedes tradition, the redesigned E-Class should arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model.

The design appears to have a more dynamic look, as the roofline appears to be slightly more sloped at the rear than the current model; with the CLS-Class and GT 4-door coupe both rumored to have no successor, designers are free to make the E-Class look a little sportier may have become a bit more sporty.

The platform is an updated version of Mercedes' MRA rear-wheel-drive architecture, which debuted on the 2021 S-Class and also appeared under the 2022 C-Class. The updated platform benefits from weight savings, primarily through the increased use of aluminum over steel. This was made possible by advanced joining techniques involving the welding of aluminum and steel.

The platform is not designed to accommodate battery-electric powertrains, but electrified powertrains should be available in all models, including AMG's eventual E 63. The E 63 will include the 2023 GT 63 S E Performance 4 door coupe and could feature the same V-8-based hybrid system that debuted in the GT 63 S E Performance 4-door coupe. This system will deliver a maximum output of 843 hp and 1,033 lb-ft of torque. However, there are rumors that the next E 63 may be downsized to a four-cylinder, like the 2024 C 63 S E Performance, which combines a 2.0-liter turbo four with a sophisticated hybrid system and produces 671 hp.

This will probably be the last E-Class with an internal combustion engine, as Mercedes just announced the EQE electric sedan for 2023 and has stated that it will have a full electric lineup by 2030.

A redesigned E-Class wagon is also planned, with both regular and all-terrain models. However, there will not be another generation of two-door E-Class variants. Mercedes is preparing a new CLE-Class to replace both the C-Class and E-Class coupe and convertible models. It should debut at about the same time as the new E-Class.
