2023 Volkswagen ID.3 Spy Shot.

Volkswagen was spotted testing an updated version of the ID.3, the compact hatch whose 2019 launch heralds the arrival of VW's ID family of electric vehicles.

The updated ID.3 is confirmed to debut in the spring and is not expected to be added to VW's U.S. lineup, but its updates could eventually be reflected in other ID models sold here.

Tweaks to the look will be minimal. The prototype sports a new front mask, and the interior, which we know from the teaser sketch, will feature a revised dash with a larger infotainment screen spanning 12.0 inches, up from 10.0 inches on the current model.

VW has also confirmed better quality materials for the cabin, enhanced driver assistance technology, and a new software backend that supports over-the-air updates. The center console will have additional cup holders, and the cargo area will have a removable floor.

Depending on the market, the ID.3 is currently offered with 45, 58, or 77 kwh battery options, with a single motor in the rear rated at 205 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque.

It is not clear if any changes will be made to the standard model, but there are rumors that a new dual-motor all-wheel drive ID.3 GTX will be part of the updated series.

The Volkswagen Group is known to be preparing an updated version of the ID.3's MEB platform, but this new platform will not be used in the updated version of the ID.3. Dubbed MEB+, this updated platform will be the VW Group's next generation accepts the battery cell design and introduces a higher charge rate.

While the updated ID.3 will not be sold in the U.S., VW will soon have several new ID models headed to the U.S. These include the ID.3 minivan. These include the ID.Buzz minivan and the new ID.7 sedan.
