Mitsubishi announces several EVs, including pickup trucks

Mitsubishi Motors announced on Friday a new mid-term strategy to launch 16 new models worldwide over the next five years, nine of which will be electrified. One of these vehicles is confirmed to be an electric truck.

This is all part of MMC's long-term goal of having 50% of its sales volume be electrified vehicles by 2030 and 100% by 2035. For Mitsubishi Motors, electrified vehicles include hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, known as xEVs.

The first of Mitsubishi's nine electrified vehicles has already been launched overseas in the form of the ASX, a rebadged version of Mitsubishi's alliance partner Renault's compact crossover, the Captur. It offers mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Other electrified vehicles known to include the Colt, a hybrid subcompact hatch based on Renault's latest Clio, and the Expander, a hybrid minivan.

No details on pickup trucks were mentioned, but Mitsubishi's other alliance partner, Nissan, has teased an electric truck, hinting that such a vehicle is being considered for sale in the US.

Despite the push for electrification, Mitsubishi plans to launch at least seven vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines over the next five years. One of those vehicles, which will debut soon, is being called a next-generation pickup truck, suggesting it will be a redesigned version of the Triton (L200), a mid-size pickup sold overseas.

A new three-row SUV and a body-on-frame SUV are also in the works. The latter, dubbed the Pickup Passenger Vehicle (PPV) by Mitsubishi, will probably be based on the next-generation pickup and may replace the current Pajero Sport sold overseas.

To support the development of all vehicles, Mitsubishi said it plans to increase its R&D and capital spending by 30% over the next six years compared to the previous six years.
