Airstream and Studio F.A. Porsche demonstrate an EV towing trailer.

Airstream recently teamed up with Studio F. A. Porsche to imagine the future of its signature trailer.

Combining the engineering style of products designed by Studio F. A. Porsche, the design house founded by Butzi Porsche, grandson of 911 designer and Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, with Airstream's signature smooth Airstream Studio F. A. Porsche Concept Travel Trailer was completed, combining the engineering style of products designed by Studio F. A. Porsche, the design house founded by Butzi Porsche, the grandson of Porsche.

The trailer's shape is refined compared to a modern Airstream to improve airflow during travel. It also features flush undersides and a drop-down suspension, a first for an Airstream. This is all designed to reduce aerodynamic drag. This is important when towing with electric vehicles.

The designers also added an insulated pop-up roof. The design of such a roof allows the height of the trailer to be lowered, which, along with the lower suspension, means that this particular Airstream can be parked inside a home's garage.

The designers also kept the Airstream's popular rear hatch option in concept, but redesigned it to be a two-piece unit with a traditional hatch that lifts and a new drop-down tailgate section.

The interior was also changed. The floor plan is unique to this concept, measuring a generous 82x61 inches and including a seating area that can be easily converted from a dining area to a sleeping area. A wet bath is built into the front street side corner and its door conceals the toilet area.

A 1/3-scale model of this concept will be on display at the annual SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on March 10.
