GMC and Earth Cruiser Prepare Hummer EV Overlander Concept

Overlanding, the practice of traveling to remote areas for weeks or months at a time, is growing in popularity.

GMC is attempting to explore this possibility with a concept based on the Hummer EV pickup. The concept, which is expected to be unveiled in late summer, is teased in a teaser shot, which shows what appears to be a canopy over the back of the electric truck.

The rear canopy appears to house a bed rack with fixtures designed to hold a variety of equipment; GMC has already previewed a similar design in the 2021 Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept. At the SEMA Show that same year, the company also unveiled a Hummer EV pickup with overlanding goodies.

GMC worked with EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles to develop its latest concept. The Australian company EarthCruiser specializes in manufacturing all types of vehicles designed for extended stays on rough terrain and has been present in the U.S. since 2013 with a division in Bend, Oregon.

One of the goals of the project was to gather ideas for overland upfit solutions developed specifically for electric vehicles, and according to Lance Gillies, CEO and founder of EarthCruiser, one of the major opportunities that EVs offer in the overland sector is is precise torque control that facilitates navigation in tricky terrain. Of course, EVs' batteries also provide energy to power equipment.

The Hummer EV Pickup's largest battery is a 205 kwh unit that, when combined with the 1,000 hp powertrain, has a range of 329 miles.
