Mercedes-Benz EQA nameplate registered as a trademark, suggesting a U.S. landing.

Mercedes-Benz has filed a trademark application for the EQA nameplate in the United States, indicating that the EQA electric compact crossover sold overseas may eventually be sold in the United States.

The trademark application was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 5, and the timing coincides with the planned refresh of the EQA for the 2024 model year. A camouflaged prototype of the 2024 EQA has recently been seen test driving.

The EQA was launched in 2021, but will be updated as the older GLA-Class on which it is based has already received the traditional mid-cycle update for 2024.The GLA-Class will be the Mercedes U.S. lineup after 2022, when the A-Class is discontinued. It will become the entry-level model.

If introduced in the U.S., the EQA would be Mercedes' entry EV in this market; just as the GLA-Class would sit below the slightly larger GLB-Class, the EQA would sit below the EQB in the EQ electric vehicle lineup, which is also scheduled for a makeover in 2024.

The EQA will be positioned below the EQB, which is also scheduled to be redesigned in 2024.

Although only the EQA nameplate is mentioned in the U.S. trademark application, it is possible that the model will be rebranded to EQA SUV in at least some markets, following the nomenclature Mercedes uses for the EQE SUV and EQS SUV. This change would free up the EQA name for an electric compact sedan in development, although it is unclear if that model will be introduced in the United States

. The compact sedan is expected to debut Mercedes' new MMA platform, which is designed to support both hybrid and all-electric vehicles and will eventually form the basis for all Mercedes compact models. the EQA crossover. not appear here, future versions based on the MMA platform may appear if Mercedes follows through on its plan to go fully electric by 2030.
