2024 Audi SQ8 E-Tron with three motors, priced at $90,895

Audi has announced a mid-cycle update to its E-Tron electric mid-size SUV for 2024. The update also introduces a new Q8 E-Tron name to better reflect the vehicle's position in the Audi lineup.

The update also applies to the sporty E-Tron S, which will become the SQ8 E-Tron. The regular body style is currently available in showrooms starting at $90,895 and the coupe-like SQ8 Sportback E-Tron body style at $93,695.

The standard Q8 E-Tron starts at $75,495 and the Q8 Sportback E-Tron at $78,895.

Both include a $1,095 destination charge.

The SQ8 E-Tron features a three-motor powertrain, with one motor in the front and two in the rear for more precise torque distribution.

With one more motor than the standard Q8 E-Tron, the SQ8 E-Tron records a peak output of 496 hp, 94 hp higher than the standard model. According to Audi, when using boost mode, the SQ8 E-Tron accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is limited to 130 mph.

This performance is the same as the previous E-Tron S, but with significant improvements regarding range and charging. The battery has been increased by 23% to 114 kwh, and the EPA-estimated range has increased by 20% to 253 miles on standard 20-inch wheels and 218 miles on 22-inch wheels. [According to Audi, it can now charge at up to 170 kwh and can charge the battery to 10-80% in about 30 minutes. Buyers will receive two years of DC fast charging at no additional charge through the Electrify America network.

In addition to the powertrain, the SQ8 E-Tron also features performance tuning of the suspension and steering system. Brakes have also been upgraded, with six-piston fixed calipers and 15.7-inch rotors in the front and sliding single-piston calipers and 13.8-inch rotors in the rear.

The SQ8 E-Tron is nearly 2 inches wider than the standard Q8 E-Tron. This allows engineers to fit wider wheels and tires. Lower drag is achieved thanks to clever wheel arch extensions that optimize flow and front brake duct flaps that remain as closed as possible to streamline airflow.

The interior offers many sporty touches, including leather trim and bolstered front seats with 12-way power adjustment. There is also an "S" logo throughout the cabin, a top version of Audi's infotainment system, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. A heads-up display is also available.

Audi is also working on an update to the gas-powered Q8, but there are rumors that this model will no longer be offered in the US after the update.
