Mitsubishi D:X concept is a rugged plug-in hybrid minivan

Mitsubishi no longer sells minivans in the United States, but the Delica is still part of the lineup in the Japanese market. At the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi unveiled a concept car that reimagines the delica as a more rugged plug-in hybrid.

The concept, dubbed D:X, has exterior design elements that suggest off-road driving, such as protruding wings and side steps that fold down the side of the body. The front and rear bumpers are also quite noticeable in minivans, but don't seem to have much effect on the approach or exit angle.

Inside there are leather seats that can be rotated and moved up and down, as well as a transparent hood function that shows what is right in front of the car. Other technical specifications include a voice assistant based on artificial intelligence and a Yamaha audio system, which, according to Mitsubishi, will achieve a 3D effect by placing speakers on the seat headrest, etc.

Although few details were provided about the powertrain, Mitsubishi confirmed the availability of a plug-in hybrid system connected to all-wheel drive and the automaker's Super all-wheel control system (S-AWC Vehicle Dynamics System). It is unlikely that Mitsubishi will return the minivan to the United States, but now the automaker offers a similar model with a mechanical configuration and a plug-in hybrid crossover Outlander.

Mitsubishi also unveiled a prototype of a redesigned mid-size Triton pickup truck (L200), which will be sold abroad at the Tokyo Motor Show. This model is also unlikely to arrive in the United States Mitsubishi confirmed earlier this year that an electric pickup truck could be developed in conjunction with an electric pickup truck from alliance partner Nissan, which its automakers are exploring for the United States.

This pickup truck is one of several electric vehicles being developed by Mitsubishi 1. Over the next 5 years, we plan to launch 9 models worldwide, including 16 electric vehicles, hybrids and plug-ins.
