Toyota EPU Electric Truck Concept Looks Ready for Production

Toyota plans to release an electric pickup truck in 2021, in the not-so-distant future, and at the Tokyo 2023 Auto Show this week, the automaker said it would unveil a potential design with an EPU concept.

The EPU is a medium-sized electric truck with a total length of 199.6 inches and a wheelbase of 131.9 inches. This compares with the updated Tacoma design, where the corresponding dimensions are 212.3 inches and 140.6 inches in 2024.

The dimensions of the bed are not specified, but the rear door has a folding design that can increase the length of the bed by several inches to carry sometimes large items, such as dirt bikes or small ATVs.

No technical details were made public, except for the concept, which features a one-piece car-like design typical of compact trucks, rather than the body-on-frame design typical of heavy trucks, including Tacoma.

The interior design is similar to the ev cabin of the Toyota Bz line and the Yoke style, which Toyota (and Lexus) are gradually expanding in some markets. These steering wheels are designed to work with the drive-by-wire steering system and are operated with only one hand.. This allows you to work only from lock to lock.

Toyota also used the Tokyo Motor Show to introduce the concept of a more advanced yoke-style steering wheel, known as the Neo-Steer, which, according to Toyota, will allow people with lower limb disabilities to drive a car, similar to motorcycle control, as well as the ability to accelerate and brake the wheels. Toyota previously introduced the concept of an electric Tacoma and an electric Hilux (Toyota's global midsize pickup truck). The production version of the more compact EPU will appeal to a wider audience, including buyers both in the lifestyle truck market and for light commercial use

The Tokyo Motor Show will open its doors to the media on October 25. Toyota also uses the show to present the concept of electric land cruisers, electric sports cars and electric crossovers. Lexus' premium division will also introduce next-generation EV technology in the form of a refined sedan concept.
