Lexus LBX Morizo RR Concept Foreshadows Forbidden Fruit

Lexus premiered a concept performance version of its recently unveiled LBX subcompact crossover at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Called the LBX Morizo RR Concept, it adds an upgraded powertrain to the LBX, which was launched in non-US markets last November. Akio Toyoda, former CEO of Toyota, racing driver, and creator of most of Toyota's current performance models, was invited to advise on the project.

The standard LBX is powered by a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder engine and a single electric motor, outputting 134 hp to the front wheels only. The Morizo RR Concept is a slightly larger version of the 1.6-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, with output increased to 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Lexus seems to have abandoned the hybrid system, but has added all-wheel drive along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This direct automatic transmission uses software that predicts driving behavior and speeds up shifting. It takes into account not only speed and deceleration g-forces, as in other smart transmissions, but also acceleration and braking. This allows the system to predict when a shift change is needed before the driver changes driving behavior.

According to Lexus, suspension, tires, and brakes have also been upgraded, although the automaker has not provided many details.

Several cosmetic changes were also made, including a Lexus spindle grille and a new front bumper with air intakes in the corners. Designers also added a splash of yellow to the grille and brake calipers.

Lexus did not mention plans for a production version of the LBX Morizo RR Concept, but such a model is unlikely to reach the U.S. anyway; the LBX is 165.0 inches long, 12.0 inches shorter than the Lexus UX.
