VW Adds Sporty GTX Option to ID.3 and ID.7 Tourer EVs

Volkswagen unveiled new GTX versions of its ID.3 hatchback and ID.7 Tourer wagon on Thursday.

The GTX badge will be used on the most powerful versions of members of VW's ID family of electric vehicles. In some markets it is already used on the ID.4 and related ID.5 compact crossovers, and VW says that about one in five buyers of these vehicles will choose the GTX version.

This is the closest thing to a performance designation for VW's EVs, but GTI versions are likely in the future, as the ID.GTI concept was shown at the 2023 Munich Motor Show.

For the ID.3 GTX, there is a 282 hp standard powertrain and a 322 hp GTX performance powertrain. Both are powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle. The standard version reaches 60 mph from a standstill in about 6 seconds and has a top speed of 111 mph; with the GTX Performance option, the 0-60 mph time is reduced to 5.6 seconds and the top speed increases to 124 mph.

The ID.7 GTX Tourer is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers 335 hp, and VW engineers have adjusted the software for the all-wheel-drive system so that the car runs on the rear motor alone during normal driving and the front motor is engaged only when the car is under heavy load or traction is needed. only the front motors are activated.

VW has not released performance figures for the ID.7 GTX Tourer.

Although the ID.3 and ID.7 Tourer are not intended for the U.S., VW plans to sell the ID.7 hatch in the U.S. later this year, and it may feature the same powertrain as the ID.7 GTX Tourer. Currently, the ID.7 hatch is only promised in the U.S. with a maximum 282 hp powertrain.
