Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster pickup priced at $86,900 in the U.S.

The market for rugged midsize pickup trucks has a new option from Ineos in the UK.

Called the "Grenadier Quartermaster," it is essentially a stretched version of Ineos' Grenadier SUV (which Ineos calls a station wagon) with a cargo bed in the back. Ineos said this week that it is taking orders for the pickup and expects to begin deliveries by the end of the year.

While the SUV, which went on sale in the U.S. last year, starts at $71,500, the pickup truck is considerably more expensive, likely due to the so-called chicken tax, a 25% duty on foreign-made small trucks. Both body styles feature body-on-frame construction and are built on the same lines at the former Mercedes-Benz plant in France.

Prices for the Quartermaster start at $86,900 in the US. Both the well-equipped Trialmaster and Fieldmaster grades start at $94,900. Both exclude destination charges.

The only powertrain available in the U.S. is a BMW 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder with 282 horsepower (diesel is also available in other markets). This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system with a center differential lock and two-speed transfer case. Also standard are LED headlights, Recaro seats, roof rails, and towing eyes front and rear.

The pickup's wheelbase is 127 inches, about 12 inches longer than the SUV's wheelbase. The rear bed is just over 60 inches long, with a maximum payload capacity of 1,675 pounds. The maximum tow rating is 7,700 pounds, the same as the SUV's rating.

Other specifications include 10.4 inches of ground clearance, 31.5 inches of wading depth, and approach, breakover, and departure angles that Ineos claims are unmatched by any commercial pickup. Equipped with Caro solid beam axles on both ends.

More expensive grades are preconfigured to fit professional offloaders in the case of Trialmaster and occasional offloaders in the case of Fieldmaster. Some grades are equipped with larger diameter wheels, air intakes, bed liners, power take-offs, front and rear differential locks, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires.
