Maserati may discontinue gasoline-powered vehicles by 2028

Maserati has moved up its plans to become an all-electric brand by two years.

Maserati announced Monday that it will have an all-electric vehicle lineup by 2028. Maserati also said it may phase out gasoline-powered vehicles in the years leading up to 2028. This is two years earlier than originally planned.

Maserati CEO Davide Grasso told Motor Authority that Maserati is prepared to phase out sales of gas-powered vehicles by 2028, but it depends on the market. Maserati CEO Davide Grasso noted that the speed of electric vehicle adoption varies by market. Whatever the timeline, automakers will offer a choice between gasoline and electric vehicles.

Maserati is known for its trademark V-8 engine, which will be discontinued after this year; by the end of 2025, all Maseratis will be electric or offer an electric powertrain option.

The first electric models, called Folgore in Maserati terminology, were the Grecarre Folgore and GranTurismo Folgore crossover SUVs. An electric convertible in the form of the GranCabrio Folgore would debut next, ushering in the era of electric convertibles, while an electric version of the MC20 supercar, known as the MC20 Folgore, is scheduled to debut in 2025. A Maserati spokesperson said that the Levante Folgore electric SUV, which will debut in 2026, will follow, and the Quattroporte Folgore, which will debut in 2028, will complete the lineup.

Maserati has built two different platforms for its current electric lineup. The Grecale will ride on a dedicated BEV architecture, while the GranTurismo Folgore (and later the GranCabrio Folgore) will ride on a modified ICE platform with a T-shaped battery pack. Also available is a dedicated BEV platform (STLA) developed by parent company Sterantis.
