Genesis G80 Magma Concept previews electric performance sedan

Genesis has launched a new performance sub-brand to compete with Mercedes-Benz AMG and BMW M.

Magma was unveiled at the 2024 New York Auto Show last month with the unveiling of the GV60 Magma Concept. This week at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show, Magma followed that original concept with a new design based on the electrified G80.

Called the G80 EV Magma, this high-performance sedan is an even more radical upgrade than the previous GV60-based concept. It also introduces a new color, Acme Blue, exclusive to the Chinese market, which is inspired by the bluish tint found in hot flames.

The G80 EV Magma stands out with its low stance and widened chassis. The grille and front mask are unique to this concept model and are joined by pumped fenders, a new rear mask, and 21-inch wheels with aerodynamic covers that run along the rims.

Genesis also upgraded the chassis with a sport-tuned suspension, a wider track, and a stronger braking package with ventilated rotors front and rear. The Genesis also reportedly features lighter-designed wheels to reduce unsprung mass.

The interior features a mix of Alcantara, quilted leather, and carbon fiber. The carbon fiber features the same blue weave as the exterior.

Powertrain specs have not been disclosed. The standard Electrified G80 is powered by an 87.2 kwh battery and, in its most powerful configuration, has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with a maximum output of 365 hp.

Genesis also did not mention production plans for the G80 EV Magma Concept, but the gas-powered G80 Magma Special sedan, unveiled in New York last month, will be available in West Asia in the future. No details about the car were revealed at its debut.

Genesis also announced updates to the electrified G80 at the Beijing Motor Show. Details are being held back until the market launch later this year, but Genesis confirmed a slightly longer wheelbase that favors rear-seat passengers, new dish-style 19-inch wheels, electronic charging port covers, more trim options, and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness levels.

Also unveiled in Beijing was the GV70. It boasts several styling changes and will go on sale next month in Korea. A U.S. launch is likely later this year, and the updated crossover will appear as a 2025 model.
