BMW Concept Sky top could reach production

BMW used the 2024 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este last weekend to debut the Concept Skytop, a V-8-seat sports car with a 2-seat engine that BMW's design chief says may reach production.

Automotive News (subscription required) reported that Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group design, said at the debut of the concept that the car was designed as a one-off, but limited production was possible within a year.

He also reportedly referred to last year's 3.0CSL as a case in which BMW has recently offered limited production cars. The 3.0CSL was built with only 50 runs, and van Hooydonk reportedly said that skytop production could be further restricted.

He also said that from the 1950s, along with the 503 and 507 cars that influenced the design of the Skytop — like BMW's Z8

production models built at the turn of the century, especially the M4CSL, which was based on the 3.0CSL, Skytop is based on the current M8 competition . Everything that fits the concept, such as slim headlights and taillights, was developed with a view for production.

During last year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este, BMW unveiled another concept, the touring coupe, that appeared to be ready for production. The designer of the car, Domagoj Dukec, hinted at the time that the execution of limited production was possible.

However, according to automotive news, VAN Hooydonk canceled plans for BMW to build a touring coupe run and the automaker was now focusing on the Sky Top.
