2025 VW Golf R with 329 hp to arrive this summer

Volkswagen announced an update to its Golf series earlier this year.

Scheduled to debut this summer, VW confirmed on social media Tuesday that the car will have 329 horsepower produced by the familiar 2.0-liter turbo four.

The 329 hp is comparable to the output of the 2022 Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition, but that special edition was detuned in the U.S. to match the standard Golf R's 315 hp It is not clear if VW will also detune the Golf R for the U.S. market.

It is also unclear whether VW will continue to offer a six-speed manual in the modified Golf R as a replacement for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; VW has already discontinued the manual in the Golf GTI.

VW has previously confirmed that all-wheel drive is a core feature of the updated Golf R.

The updated Golf range benefits from styling changes, more standard equipment, a larger infotainment screen (available in standard 10.4" and 12.9"), and improved electronic driver assistance technology.

Once again, the U.S. will not get most of the improved Golf models. Only the Golf GTI and Golf R will be available in the United States. Both will be available as 2025 models.

The next-generation Golf 9 has been confirmed by VW to be an electric car, so the updated Golf is expected to be the last to offer a gas engine, due around 2028.
