Former Lamborghini R&D head joins startup producing Diablo restomods

Former Lamborghini R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani has joined San Marino-based Eccentrica to help the company build a restomod of the Lamborghini Diablo.

He will also serve as the company's face during a presentation scheduled for next month's 2024 Monterey Car Week.

In an interview with Bloomberg published Monday, Reggiani said the Diablo restomod being developed by Eccentrica is aimed at those who want a V12 engine and minimal level of electronic control.

Reggiani, who retired in 2023 after nearly 30 years at Lamborghini, was involved in the development of the Murciélago, Gallardo, and Aventador.

When Reggiani first joined Lamborghini, the Diablo supercar was still in production.

Eccentrica, a passion project founded by Emmanuel Colombini, head of the Italian Colombini furniture company, unveiled the Diablo restomod in 2023. According to Bloomberg, deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2025.

The donor Diablo will be stripped down to a tubular steel chassis, which will then be reinforced and new body panels added. The interior will also be touched up, and the engine used will be the 5.7-liter V-12 from earlier Diablos (later versions will upgrade to a 6.0-liter engine).

Eccentrica plans to build only 19 restomods, each starting at 1.35 million euros (about $1.47 million). The company has not indicated whether it plans a follow-on model.
