Hyundai Elantra N, Kona N, Veloster N, and Genesis G70 recalled for loss of power

Hyundai is recalling 54,647 N Performance models due to a possible fuel pump defect that could lead to a loss of power.

The recall, announced Monday by the NHTSA, covers the 2019-2022 Hyundai Veloster N, 2022-2023 Hyundai Elantra N, 2022-2023 Hyundai Kona N, and 2019-2023 Genesis G 70 sport sedan.

In the affected vehicles, the fuel control valve in the fuel pump may wear out prematurely and fail, causing excessive fuel to flow into the pump. As a result, the air-fuel mixture may become too thick, resulting in loss of power while driving, especially at low speeds. Drivers may notice a lack of power, rough idling, large engine misfires, and/or a check engine light on the gauge cluster.

Hyundai reported 2,460 recall-related cases in the U.S. market over a five-year period with no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue. The investigation that led to the decision to initiate the recall was prompted by reports of similar problems with vehicles in other markets

.

Owners are expected to be notified by mail by September 9, 2024, to bring their vehicles to the dealership to at least update the engine control software. The dealer will also inspect the fuel pump and replace it if necessary. All work will be done free of charge and most of the recalled cars are still under warranty. Hyundai may offer a refund if for some reason the owner has already paid for the work at his or her own expense.
