Smart Electric Compact Crossover Targets Tesla Model Y

Smart is best known for the fortwo, but that minicar is no longer in production. Instead, smart is today unveiling an electric crossover that is larger than the brand has ever been.

Next to be unveiled is the smart #5, an electric crossover that is expected to be 185.2 in length, or just 2.5 inches smaller than the Tesla Model Y. Sales are expected to begin in 2025, but since Smart is no longer operating in the U.S., sales in the U.S. are not expected. In addition, the #5 is expected to be manufactured in China, which would result in high tariffs if sold in the US.

From the teaser shots, the production version will be a faithful reflection of the concept's design. It will have a boxy design emphasized by muscular haunches, giving it a rugged look. Smart said that the #5 will also be available with "unexpected outdoor elements," suggesting that it could also feature details such as roof racks, skid plates, and even flared wheel arches that house larger tires for off-road use.

There are no interior shots, but the design is likely to be similar to the previously unveiled concept car. That is, a digital screen will be used for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, and a third screen will be added for the passenger seat.

Details of the powertrain have not been announced, but rumors suggest that at least one version will have nearly 640 hp. The concept had a dedicated EV platform with 800-volt technology and a battery with a capacity of over 100 kwh.

The latest Smart was developed by a Chinese joint venture established in 2019 between Mercedes-Benz, parent company of the original Smart, and Zhejiang Geely. Mercedes remains in charge of designing the vehicle, with the bulk of engineering and production handled by Geely in China.
