Ford offers affordable power upgrades for the Ranger and Mustang GT

On Wednesday, Ford announced enhancements that Ranger and Mustang GT owners should seriously consider.

The modifications, developed by Ford Performance, consist of engine calibrations that increase horsepower and torque not only at peak, but throughout the entire rev range.

The Ranger upgrade, codenamed M-9603-REB, boosts the pickup truck's 2.3-liter inline four by 45 hp and 60 lb-ft of torque, with peak output of 315 hp and 370 lb-ft. The upgrades also include a high-flow air filter, and models with the 10-speed automatic transmission will feature an optimized shift program that Ford says provides sharper and more precise gear changes.

The Mustang GT calibration is for 2018 through 2020 models. Power will increase by 19 hp and 18 lb-ft, reaching 479 hp and 438 lb-ft. The upgrade adds 42 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. The upgrade also includes a cold air intake and a larger 87mm throttle body (standard is 80mm).

The upgrades cost $825 for the Ranger and $1,275 for the Mustang GT. Both modifications are legal in all 50 states and come with their own 3-year/36,000-mile factory warranty when installed by a Ford dealer or certified technician.

The downside is that both systems require premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher.
