The Genius Garage, which turns a Porsche Boxster into a Leicaan Hypersport.

An Ohio production team is turning an old Porsche Boxster into a supercar, limited to seven copies worldwide and valued at $3.4 million.

The car in question is a 2013 W Motors Leicaan Hypersport replica at a workshop in Bowling Green, Ohio. The replica was originally built for the show Wild Speed, but was sold in 2018 when the show's production company went bankrupt. Nothing remains of the replica but a fiberglass shell attached to a wooden frame.

It is now in the hands of Genius Garage, an educational organization that provides real-world experiences for university students studying automotive and aerospace engineering. Genius Garage was founded by automotive designer and racer Casey Putsch, who has documented many of the production processes on YouTube.

It is important to emphasize that the Genius Garage Lycan Hypersport has the same mid-engine chassis and flat-six engine, but is very different from the real car. The Leicaan Hypersport is powered by a Ruf 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six with 770 hp. The Porsche Boxster is a 2007 Boxster S with a 3.4-liter flat-six making 295 hp. It is unknown if Genius Garage has any plans for it.

Conversion is a tricky business. First, the Lykan Hypersport has a longer wheelbase than the Boxster. To increase length, the team plans to move the entire engine, transmission, and suspension rearward. Genius Garage has selected a team of students who will assist in the build and learn along the way.

The finished replica will be unveiled at the 2020 SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November.
