The Alfa Romeo Giulietta will be discontinued by the end of 2020.

The Giulietta, Alfa Romeo's compact hatchback sold abroad, will be phased out by the end of 2020, Fabio Migliavacca, the Italian automaker's head of product marketing, told Autocar in an interview published Thursday.

The Golf rival in its current form has been in production since 2010 and has never been sold here, but its basic platform has been used by parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for several local models such as the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart.

Alfa Romeo has no plans to redesign the Giulietta. Instead, it will fill the gap with the Tonale compact crossover, scheduled for release in late 2021. According to Migliavacchi, the SUV will better meet the needs of buyers who want a more compact vehicle. The automaker already discontinued the MiTo subcompact hatchback in 2018.

FCA is currently in the process of merging with France's PSA Group, which has led to a reduction in plans for additional Alfa Romeo models for the time being. This means that planned models such as the mid-size SUV, GTV coupe and 8C supercar will no longer be produced.

In a separate interview with Autocar, Miriavacca also stated that Alfa Romeo has no plans to extend the revived GTA badge not only to the Giulia sports sedan, but also to the Stelvio SUV, for example. Miriavacca said that the GTA badge is intended to denote the brand's most racing models and is not suitable for SUVs.
