Cadillac Lik A new electric SUV will debut in April.

Cadillac's long-awaited electric crossover, information about which surfaced last year, has been dubbed the Lyriq, General Motors announced Wednesday.

Its debut is scheduled for April, and its arrival will mark the beginning of the brand's general return to actual model names, as opposed to the boring alphanumeric names Cadillac uses for its current lineup (the only exception being the iconic Escalade).

The Lyric model was first announced over a year ago when, during an investor presentation, GM released several teaser sketches showing both the interior and exterior of the car. These sketches suggested a very futuristic design for the car and the possibility of a third row of seats.

It is known that the Lilik will be based on a specialized EV platform and will be powered by a new type of battery, which GM has named Ultium. This battery requires less of the rare earth element cobalt, offers greater packaging flexibility and lower manufacturing costs than existing designs. GM plans to offer this battery in sizes ranging from 50 to 200 kilowatt-hours, with the largest size being able to travel more than 400 miles on a single charge. The largest size can travel more than 400 miles on a single charge. However, it is not yet clear what size Lyriq will offer.

As for the new platform, it will support front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive configurations for high-performance vehicles. This platform and the new Ultium battery will also support the GMC Hummer EV, which will be unveiled in May.

The Lyric model will be unveiled in April, but GM has not said when it will hit the market. It is currently believed to be introduced in late 2021 as a 2022 model.
