Spy shots and video of the 2021 Maserati MC20

The Maserati MC20 supercar has been spotted ahead of its world debut in late May. [Engineers are still using the Alfa Romeo 4C's makeshift bodywork to hide the mechanicals, but it's already clear that a longer and wider car is in front of us.

Maserati has been hinting at a new sports car ever since the GranSport model ceased production over a decade ago. Serious intentions surfaced in 2014 when Maserati unveiled the Alfieri Concept, and production plans were confirmed shortly after its debut.

Plans have since changed, with the MC20 now a two-seat mid-engined supercar, while the stunning lines of the front-engined, 2+2 Alfieri are expected to be carried over to the upcoming GranTurismo. A redesign of the Maserati Grand Tourer is planned for 2021, which will be Maserati's first battery-powered model.

The MC20 will also eventually be battery-powered, but will have a V6-based hybrid powertrain in its initial production phase. It will most likely be a plug-in hybrid, but could also be a mild hybrid.

Maserati also plans to create an MC20 race car, but has not yet revealed which class and series it will be developed for.

Production of the MC20 will take place at Maserati's historic Modena plant, which ceased production of the GranTurismo last November. Production of the updated GranTurismo will take place at Maserati's headquarters plant in Turin.

There is a busy period ahead for Maserati. In addition, new Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante models with plug-in hybrid powertrains will begin production this year. And next year, Maserati will unveil an updated GranTurismo and a small SUV that is expected to be related to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio.
