2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 with 382 hp enters the race.

Mercedes-Benz will unveil an updated GLA compact crossover in the summer.

The new GLA45 was unveiled on Tuesday ahead of its world debut at next week's Geneva Motor Show, and is confirmed to arrive in showrooms in late 2020 as a 2021 model.

There is also a GLA35 model, but dynamics enthusiasts will prefer the GLA45, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four with 382 hp and 354 torque. Unlike other AMG compact cars, the 416-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter engine is not offered in the United States. The model under the S nameplate with the 416-hp version of the 2.0-liter engine is not available in the United States.

Paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the engine quickly accelerates the GLA45 to 60 mph in less than 4.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 miles per hour.

In addition to the powerful powertrain, the GLA45 is equipped with the latest version of the AMG all-wheel drive system for compact cars. This rear-wheel-drive system distributes torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also to the rear wheels thanks to a rear differential with two multi-plate clutches.

The suspension is also tuned for dynamic driving. At the front, the MacPherson strut design and special geometry aimed at reducing torque redistribution help to cope with high power. The rear suspension is a four-link system connected to the body via a rear axle support for increased rigidity. There are adjustable shock absorbers at each corner.

The GLA45 comes standard with 19-inch wheels (21-inch wheels are also available), with a powerful braking system inside each wheel with 13.8-inch rotors and four-piston calipers at the front and 13.0-inch rotors and single-piston calipers at the rear. A larger system with 14.2-inch rotors and six-piston calipers is also available.

The interiors of Mercedes' latest compact cars are a big step up from the competition, and this is true for the GLA45 as well. The instrument panel and infotainment system features a 10.25-inch digital screen. The system also features natural voice activation, eight-way power front seats with memory function, a multifunction steering wheel, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Several electronic driver assistance systems are also standard. These include brake assist, headwind assist, and a power liftgate. Optional extras include adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and a surround-view camera.

Pricing will be announced closer to the start of sales later this year.
